I wear makeup often. About four days out of the week, and I like to do a full coverage routine. It's a preference that I've had for ages as I feel like it just completes the whole makeup look but one thing about me is that I don't clean my brushes nearly as often as I should. I've recently gotten in the habit of doing so because if I don't, I get horrible breakouts on my cheeks, nose and along my jaw. My skin type is oily and oily skin can also be very acne prone so breakouts are often unexpected. To keep them at bay, I simplified my skincare routine. I've narrowed it down to three cruelty-free and zero waste products which I use almost daily.
The first product is a facial soap from a zero waste store called Babongo. It's a Pine & Charcoal face soap which I use to cleanse my face every morning and before I go to sleep. The product is completely natural which I love and maintains the oiliness of my skin.
It was also packaged in paper packaging which is a pro and a con; the pro is that it's a zero waste product which is of course great, but a big con is that after the packaging is removed you have to put it in a soap tray (which I was very unprepared for so I ended up just resting it on a shelf to dry).
The second product is a tea tree serum which I purchased from The Body Shop. It's packaged in glass which is recyclable and comes with a glass dropper which is reusable. I'm planning on reusing the container by scrubbing off the label and creating my own toner or serum after this product is finished. The serum is great to use after a shower, but it can be drying so I skip it some mornings or use it after I've applied a face mask. If this is the case, I generally skip the third product which is...
... an essential oil. I've been loving essential oils lately. I use Frankincense the most often, but I switch between that, Lavender and Tea Tree. After I've washed my face with the soap bar, I pat it dry and then apply the essential oil onto my face. After the oil is completely dry, I might apply moisturizer or a water-based serum to boost moisture in my skin.
In case you're wondering, essential oils are still great even if you have oily skin! It just depends which ones work for you. I recommend lavender, tea tree, frankincense, jojoba and rosehip oil. Some oils might be too strong to apply directly. My skin didn't react badly to it when I applied the essential oils directly, but carrier oils are a good idea. I liked using jojoba as a carrier oil but in all honesty, I don't use it anymore because I don't find it necessary - your skin might be different, however. One oil that I have been avoiding using on my face is coconut oil. Plot twist? I understand. Although very beneficial, coconut oil can be terrible for your face. That and St. Ives Apricot Scrub are the two products I will never put on my face - coconut oil clogs pores like no other and is much too heavy for oily skin types, causing breakouts instead of clearing skin up. Coconut oil is great for your body and moisturizing for your hair but if you have oily skin like I do or if your skin is acne prone. It's beneficial to avoid using on the face; even using it to remove your makeup could be bad because it might leave a film of it behind. Instead, wash with a good face wash and lukewarm water and do one last rinse with cold water to close any pores.
